AFP-VA Applauds Governor Youngkin’s State of the Commonwealth Address
Richmond, VA – Today, Governor Glenn Youngkin launched his priorities in his State of the Commonwealth speech. He discussed the reality of Virginians suffering under the present energy policy, called for an opportunity scholarship fund for underprivileged children to access education options suited to their needs, and called to cut taxes for Virginia workers and businesses – all key issues that are on AFP-VA’s legislative agenda.
Following the address, AFP-VA State Director Tim Parrish said:
“Gov. Youngkin intimately understands what Virginians want from the General Assembly: a more affordable lifestyle, quality educations for their children, and opportunities to pursue their own version of the Virginia Dream.
“The Virginia Clean Economy Act is driving up rates, while driving down reliability and constricting our economic growth. The outrageous power bills we are dealing with and a grid that is not keeping pace with Virginia’s growing demand is a major concern to every single Virginian. The General Assembly should heed Governor Youngkin’s call and act decisively to remove the barriers in the Virginia Clean Economy Act that are putting the grid at risk and abandoning common sense solutions that lower power bills and make a more sustainable grid.
“The reality is that the education market in Virginia is broader than just public schools. We should have the best public schools in the country, but the best public schools are not always the best option for every child. We support the Governor’s efforts and the efforts of others advancing the General Assembly to expand education opportunities for Virginia’s most vulnerable students.
“As Speaker Scott recently called for and Governor Youngkin has always championed, we must pass tax relief this session. While Governor Youngkin asks lawmakers to send relief to his desk, AFP-VA will partner with the Governor and aligned members of the General Assembly to ensure that we pass tax cuts to help everyday Virginians and business owners struggling with the cost of living.”
